Chi Awareness Practice

Kun-Yang Lin’s Chi Awareness Practice is a somatic and meditative approach to movement that centers on the cultivation, circulation, and embodiment of chi—the vital life force. Rooted in Eastern philosophy and informed by disciplines such as Qigong, Tai Chi, and martial arts, the practice invites dancers to move from an internal source rather than external form.

At its core, Chi Awareness emphasizes listening inward—awakening breath, sensing energy pathways, and allowing movement to arise organically from the dantian (the body’s energetic center). Rather than focusing on shape or technique alone, practitioners develop a heightened sensitivity to weight, flow, and intention, creating movement that feels both grounded and expansive.

The practice also explores the balance of yin and yang qualities—softness and strength, stillness and action, yielding and assertion—encouraging a dynamic equilibrium within the body. Through guided improvisation, imagery, and structured exercises, dancers learn to connect physical action with emotional and energetic resonance.

More than a training method, Chi Awareness Practice is a pathway toward presence, integration, and transformation. It fosters clarity of mind, openness of heart, and a deepened connection between self, others, and space—ultimately allowing movement to become an authentic expression of one’s inner landscape.

“As a young dancer, he impressed his teachers with his impeccable muscle memory and spatial awareness. He went on to develop these skills into a novel movement and mindfulness discipline, CHI Awareness Practice, named for the Chinese concept of universal energy flow. This technique remains central to his work.” - The Philadelphia Inquirer
